Lombok - Mt Rinjani Hiking Cost, Tips and Tricks

Lombok. Just the name itself conjures images of lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and of course, the mighty Mount Rinjani. My recent trip to this Indonesian island was all about one thing: scaling the heights of Rinjani, the second-highest volcano in the country.

The trek itself was an unforgettable journey. We weaved through dense forests, crossed gurgling streams, and with every step, the anticipation for the summit grew. The sense of accomplishment reaching the crater rim was incredible. But that wasn't all. Our guides surprised us with a steaming pot of hot tea – a perfect way to warm up and energize for the final push to the peak.

Ah, the summit. As the first rays of dawn kissed the horizon, we stood atop Mount Rinjani, the world stretched out before us in a tapestry of volcanic ash, crater lake, and distant Lombok rolling hills. The view was simply stunning. Words fail to capture the raw beauty and the feeling of being on top of the world, literally.

The descent was equally rewarding, offering a different perspective of the landscape. But that memory of the sunrise, with a steaming cup of tea in hand, will forever be etched in my mind.

Lombok and Mount Rinjani are not just a place; they're an experience. An experience that tests your limits, humbles you with nature's grandeur, and rewards you with breathtaking vistas. If you're looking for an adventure that will stay with you long after you return home, then look no further than Rinjani. Just be sure to pack some warm clothes – that hot tea at the top is a lifesaver!

Here are 10 tips and tricks to ensure your Rinjani adventure is a success:

  1. Train Like a Champ: Rinjani is no walk in the park. Get your fitness up to par with regular hikes and cardio exercises at least two months beforehand. I was doing 4-hr hikes every 2 weekends and trained 600 floors in a HDB staircase!

  2. Pack Light, Pack Smart: Every gram counts. Choose a comfortable backpack and pack only essentials. Opt for quick-dry clothes for easy layering.

  3. Embrace the Layers: Temperatures can plummet at higher altitudes. Pack thermals, a fleece jacket, and a wind and waterproof outer layer. Remember, you'll be trekking in both sunshine and potentially chilly nights. We bought Merino Wool from Decathlon and it fits the bill.

  4. Hydration is Key: Dehydration is a real threat at altitude. Invest in a good water bottle and sip frequently throughout the trek.

  5. Fuel Your Climb: Pack plenty of high-calorie snacks and energy bars. You'll burn through calories quickly, so keep your energy levels up.

  6. Befriend the Walking Stick: This is not an optional suggestion! A walking stick will be your best friend on uneven terrain, especially on the descent. It helps with balance, reduces stress on your knees, and provides overall support.

  7. Blister Prevention is Paramount: Apply moleskin or sports tape to areas prone to blisters, especially your toes and heels. Pack moleskin for on-the-trail repairs too.

  8. Summit Snack Stash: Don't forget to pack some celebratory treats for the top! Sharing a chocolate bar or enjoying a personal victory cookie at the peak will be a memorable moment.

  9. Respect the Mountain: Rinjani is a sacred place. Be mindful of the environment, stick to designated trails, and dispose of waste properly.

  10. Embrace the Challenge: There will be tough moments, but the sense of accomplishment at the summit is unparalleled. Remember, it's not just about reaching the top, it's about the entire journey.

Bonus Tip: Be prepared for the very cold temperatures at the summit. Pack a warm hat and gloves – that hot tea at the top will be even more welcome!
