So many bak kwas, which ones to buy from for 2014?
With so many delicious Bak Kwa offerings from various shops, how do we know which ones to select from? Since Chinese New Year doesn't happen all year round, I always feel that we shouldn't compromise on quality. Over the years, my parents have been exploring the different brands of Bak Kwa and we've come up with our own personal favourites. Because NO bak kwa from 2 different brands taste the same, here's a list of suggested brands you can buy from.
1. New Peng Hiang
Founded: 1984
I first chanced upon this brand a few years back in a Food Exhibition. If you're looking for thick and fat but juicy meat, New Peng Hiang is the way to go. There is no lingering smell of charcoal, and it may be rather tough to chew on. Sometimes I enjoy eating chewy meat, and perhaps if you're looking for something to exercise your gums on, New Peng Hiang is the way to go!
2. Kim Hock Guan
Founded: 1905
Kim Hock Guan remains a family-owned and operated business with a history of FIVE generations. If that claim is true, that makes Kim Hock Guan the oldest Bak Kwa brand in Singapore. They currently have 4 branches and 1 factory, but their Bak Kwa is much thicker than the usual ones. Thankfully, it is not very oily. I love how there isn't a lot of burnt parts in each slice too!
3. Kim Joo Guan
Founded: 1977
Unlike other stores, Kim Joo Guan does not seem to have their own griller in-store. However, the pork does not taste frozen as it is soft and chewy, and most tourists usually love to bring this brand back to their home country. That tells us why they have a branch at Changi Airport departure terminal! I would buy this off-peak when it is not Chinese New Year as the flavour of Bak Kwa is quite strong. Oh yes, they also do have nice packagings that would make Bak Kwa as a good gift!
4. Lim Chee Guan
Founded: 1938
This is definitely my top favourite, and I guess that is why you have to spend both your moolah and a lot of time just to get their "Trademark BBQ Sliced pork". Orders are taken before 10am, and you can forget about queuing in the afternoon. We queued for 2 hours but I think it is well worth it. After all, why waste your caloric input on bad-tasting food?
Please be advised that this list of recommended Bak Kwa may be subjective as taste buds would be different. The list is not exhaustive of all Bak Kwas that are available in Singapore, but in my honest opinion, these are the brands that I love! Nevertheless, I wish you a blessed and prosperous Chinese New Year!
