Penang is internationally famous for their char kway teow. I once tried Penang's Char Kway Teow at Gurney drive and it has left me an unforgettable impression since. My partner and I got on a cruise last week to Penang, and I told him that the only thing on my to-do list is to eat the Char Kway Teow again. We decided to head to Sin Guat Keong Coffee Shop as there are many raved reviews about the Char Kway Teow there (and also, the Penang Tourism brochure itself recommends that place).
In front of this stall, there is a lady who calls out to people on the street shouting "Char Kway Teow, Char Kway Teow!". Apparently, the hawker has been in the business for more than 7 years. There are two versions: one with egg (RM3.60) and one with mantis prawns (RM6.60). Before we headed to the stall, my partner was telling me a story about how mantis prawns prey on their food which really scared me so I decided to try the simple char kway teow with egg.
The uncle was obviously skilled at this because he rhythmically played with his wok. What I didn't like was that he was smoking cigarettes as he cooked. Also, we were seated right beside the road and there were fumes from passing vehicles. It also felt pretty dangerous and unsafe because the vehicles don't seem to slow down.

Me trying to figure my way around the Char Kway Teow |
This is not as good as the Char Kway Teow I remembered from Gurney Drive, but still pretty decent. It wasn't drenched in oil but the 'wok-hei' aroma was covered by his cigarette smoke. We were also pressurised to buy the 'Peanut soup' from a nearby dessert stall but it wasn't to our liking.
