Kakis Bistro & Bar Special: 6-course meal

As promised in my earlier post: 10 Reasons why every Singaporean should visit Kakis Bistro and Bar, here is a full review on Kakis Bistro & Bar food and its prices. As I was invited to a food tasting event by OC Group Asia, we got to try out special activities such as making our own Mojito. A Mojito is a cocktail that consists of white rum, lime or lemon juice, sugar, mint, ice, and carbonated or soda water.

Although the process is a really easy one, it's actually really difficult to make a delicious Mojito. My creation was too strong in mint and lime, and tasted weirdly minty! Others managed to make a really refreshing drink though.

Moral of the story: Looks like I'm really not cut out for making alcoholic beverages and should stick to eating and drinking merrily instead.

Prawn Alioli with Homegrown Lemongrass & Coriander — SGD9.80

The prawns tasted freshly-caught and cooked. I loved the fact that they removed the digestive tract (containing poo) of the prawns, as I really can't stomach the idea of eating prawn poo. The lemongrass and coriander removed the nasty pungent prawn odour, making the dish refreshing and light.

Stir-Fried Button Mushrooms with Homegrown Kaffir Leaf, Shallots and White Wine — SGD8.50

While others at my dining table lavished praise on the Stir-Fried Button Mushrooms, I thought the texture was slightly too soft and almost soggy. Despite having a very strong fragrance (courtesy of the white wine), the uneven cuts of the mushrooms (some pieces were quite huge for biting) made it quite uncomfortable. Other diners, however, saw that as a bonus because the natural juice from the mushrooms actually spurted tantalisingly with each bite.

Fries Addiction — SGD6.00

This is a 'love-it-or-hate-it' kind of dish. Coated with strong chilli and other spices, the fries initially tasted too spicy. However, there is something enchanting about this dish: the more you eat it, the more you truly get addicted to it. Even my friend with no tolerance for chilli persevered and fell in love with the fries. What I loved most was that the thinly-cut fries were long and extremely crispy.

Chicken Quesadilla with Homemade Salsa — SGD10.00

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Chicken Quesadilla to every patron. Initially disappointed with its lacklustre presentation, I fell head over heels with it after my first bite. The tomatoes and spices were not overpowering and the cheese was generously slathered within. The flavours of sweetness and saltiness seemed to be at loggerheads in my mouth, yet gave rise to a unique blend of contrasting sensations.

Love how they generously spread the cheese within the tortilla.

Aglio Olio with Homegrown Kaffir Leaf — SGD16.00

Similar to the Prawn Alioli, the prawns here were really fresh and tasty. This is one of the stronger-tasting Aglio Olios in which the spices seemed to overpower the olive oil, thus creating a spicier, more fiery pasta. I really loved how the pasta strands did not turn soggy even though we left the food on the table for a long time while making our Mojito. The strong fragrance emanating from the swirls of pasta certainly made my stomach growl: I want all of that in my tummy.

Traditional Fish & Chips — SGD17.00

Fish & Chips is a tradition, so really, there wasn't any innovative twist to this. However, I loved the flaky batter which made the fish really crispy and satisfying to chew. I thought that the slab of fish was too thin, but was glad that it remained the highlight and focus instead of ancillaries like the coleslaw and chips. This is the real deal: forget about fish and chips without chips (but rice instead, common at hawker stalls). The dish is served with a highly-delicious coleslaw on the side, which is extremely fresh, crunchy and sweet.

Red Velvet Cake — SGD9.50/slice

I would definitely not recommend the Red Velvet Cake, although it must have been freshly-baked on the spot as Kakis took quite a while to serve it. The cake was sorely lacking in moisture, making every bite difficult and uncomfortable. There was only a faint sweet flavour, and I couldn't help thinking it tasted like Pandan Cake. Anyway, this most probably is a healthy rendition of Red Velvet Cake so it's great for weight-watchers and those on a strict diet.
